Elsie Elsie was born in an Appalachian farming community in 1941. She is white, about 5'4'' and weighs around three hundred pounds. She was born with only one external ear, no ear canals and with palsy. She became homeless after a divorce from an abusive husband and a second marriage and divorce, when she lost her job and her roommate got married and wanted the apartment for herself. Elsie lives in shelters and uses her car as a clothes closet. She found that living in shelter meant giving up one's autonomy. She has no privacy and is forced to surrender to shelter rules. At one point she planned to prepay six months storage costs when she thought, incorrectly, that she was getting a $800 income tax refund.
