Trade and Development With the exception of a handful nations in North America western Europe, Japan, Australia, etc. most of the nations of the world are classified as less developed countries (LDCs) or, to put it more positively, as developing countries. In relations to the developed countries (DCs), LDCs are characterized by (in general) low average real per capita income, low life expectancies, high rates of illiteracy, high rates of population growth, relative importance of the primarily on internal conditions in LDCs, most economists today believe that international trade can contribute significantly to the development process. The effect of international trade on economic development has long been one of the most passionately debated subjects like many other topics in economics.
