In What Ways Was Bristol Involved With Slavery And The Slave Trade In The 18th Century? The Atlantic Slave Trade was the trade of African slaves by Europeans that occurred in and around the Atlantic Ocean. Also known as the triangular trade, it began in the 15th century, 1562 to be precise, and was abolished in 1834, although most slaves weren't released until 1838. Most slaves were shipped from West and Central Africa and brought over to the New World. Some slaves were captured by raids or kidnapping, but most were obtained through trading British Items (guns, alcohol and other raw materials) with African chiefs. Historians estimate that between 9.4 and 12 million Africans arrived in the New World, not to count the millions who died on the long cramped ship journey over there.
