James McMeekin How successful were Mussolini's economic policies between 1919 and 1939? Mussolini's style of government was very reactive - e.g. policies were chopped and changed to ensure political survival. He did have economic objectives but with a stable economic policy he could ensure political stability. He also wanted the support of the elites, whether this meant lowering taxes or reducing government intervention in industry and Mussolini would play along accordingly. A clear economic objective of this fascist style dictatorship would include military expansion and expansion in the associated sectors. The corporate state or 'the third way' was designed by high-ranking fascists in order to stop working class support for communism whilst keeping the support of the capitalists. It would also ensure that economic policy was firmly in the hands of the fascist administration. It would bring both employers and employees of the same trade into one confederation. These...
