The long term reasons include the drastic decline of old industries. This is owing to bad management and not enough people investing on them, because of having no money of their own. Due to England coming off the Gold Standard, the pound had a very high value, resulting in foreign countries looking for other, cheaper sources for the exports that England relied on supplying. Even if the other countries continued purchasing goods from England, however, it would cost England more money to ship them than it had previously.
