History coursework part b(1) Smuggling During the 18th century many people were forced into purchasing smuggled goods or smuggling goods themselves because of the high price of luxuries such as tobacco, tea, sprit, lace etc. the extra amount of tax on items was a worry to poorer families so smuggling was seen as a savour Smuggling was a way in which the public could receive the same amount of quality but for a cheaper price. As smuggling continued the government was loosing more money. The government did their best to stop smuggling by enforcing harsh punishments i.e. death. Unfortunately the government didn't have the backing of the public they were supporting the smugglers because they were keeping the prices down.
