Extract 3: Makassar Tax Officers secured 300 tons of raw sugar from India - Tempo (13 March 2003) Abstract: Makassar Tax Officers has secured almost 300 tons of raw sugar in 15 containers from India. It was assumed this was black market good. The sugar was shipped from Medan, North Sumatra by MV Tanto ship. The sender of this package was anonymous and he did not print the name and address of the receiver. If the sugar did not have the appropriate and official documents, the government would suffer a big loss. The Makassar police would ask Medan for explanation. Commentary: (date written March 17, 2003) International trade would benefit mostly on the consumers, while local producers would frequently suffer the consequences of free trade. Local producers sometimes cannot compete their prices with the imported goods, and hence their revenue and profit would go down, and they will go bankrupt. Black market sugar that is...
