Introduction The purpose of this report is to show in some detail how the moratorium placed on fishing Northern Cod has affected both unemployment and the population of Newfoundland. Newfoundland has always been known for its fishing, when John Cabot first arrived in the 15th Century he claimed that buckets lowered from the side of his ships came up full with Cod. (1) Portugal and Spain had long been fishing in the plentiful waters and were later joined by colonists (2). These colonists settled as Canadians, and set up communities that became entirely dependant on fishing for their economic wellbeing. Fish processing plants where set up, schools were built in order to educate the children of fishermen, and stores were built thanks to the fishing industry.
