A study of Jamaican debt Life and debt is a 2001 documentary film made by Stephanie Black that is set in Jamaica and draws its inspiration from an essay written in 1988 called A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid. The essay is about the Antiguan government, the tourist industry and its British colonial history. The film follows the same general idea but about Jamaica and focuses more on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund's loans to Jamaica and how they have affected the people who live there. The main criticisms made by this film are of the structural adjustment programs set as a condition of the loans, such as trade liberalisation, privatisation and deregulation. Using extracts from Jamaica Kincaid's essay this film provides a first person view of what life is like after the WB and IMF enact their policies and this film shows a lot of the contrasts between what
