The coming of the Greeks. The Greeks are said to have came to Greece from the north, they gradually built a civilisation as people, just a few at a time, went in search of new dwellings and new fields to cultivate. They began by fighting, and afterwards made friends with the old inhabitants. The new-comers were shepherds and farmers, and therefore did not care much for the arts, however after a time the old and new inhabitants began to intermarry, and so the Greek race was formed. The descendants of Hellen. The people we call Greeks originally called them-selves Hellenes, they had a great many of elaborate stories to tell, one of them stating that they all descended from Hellen, son of Ducalion, in whose time mankind were very cruel. And so Zeus, the chief of all gods, was said to have sent a huge flood of rain, which poured down incessantly...
