Awake & Sing! Plot & Sub-plot Intro: Awake and Sing is a play written by innovative playwright Clifford Odets and is about a poor Jewish Family in the 1930's in the continuously trying to stay 'afloat' during the after affects of The Great Depression when salaries were on a steady decline. The entire play takes place in an apartment in The Bronx, New York over the duration of two years. The family around which the main plot is centred consists of: Bessie Berger; the mother, Myron Berger; the father, Grandpa Jacob; Bessie's father, Hennie Berger; Bessie and Myron's daughter and the youngest in the family, Ralph Berger. Bessie also has a brother called Morty who is an extremely successful businessman in the clothing industry.
