Background research on Morality plays The Morality Play is a genre of theatre very popular from the early 1400s to the 1580s. An allegory in dramatic form, its dramatic origins are to be found in the Mystery and Miracle plays of the late Middle Ages; its allegorical origins in the sermon literature, romances and works of spiritual edification. The play dramatizes the battle between the forces of good and evil in the human soul. Nearly all Moralities are didactic illustrations and commentaries of the central preoccupation of Christian thought in the Middle Ages: the war between God and the Devil. Each Morality Play follows a common basic narrative structure, with its own unique variations. The central character is an ordinary person - someone with whom the whole audience can identify, who has ordinary human experiences.
