Oh What A Lovely War Use of language * The play relies heavily on the audience being able to distinguish between the upper and lower classes. For this reason, many scenes are written phonetically in order to indicate the different accents used. * We meet characters, not only from varying areas of England, but also of different countries, so different accents, and often different languages are used. * The upper classes speak in very stereotypical "posh" accents. This shows them to be pompous and vain. * The soldiers and lower classes speak in cockney accents, or annunciate sloppily, which makes them seem less intelligent, but puts the audience at ease with them. This results in us finding it a lot easier to trust them than the upper classes. * The language used by the upper classes is often complex, but cliché.
