How Does A Musical Number Move Forward The Narrative? Give Examples An effective area of many musicals in moving the narrative forward is often seen through the use of theatrical devices. This is an effective approach whereby songs are used as replacements of a scene. This approach provides an original way of creating a more stimulating performance to the audience, thus keeping them more involved and more enticed to watch more. This device in turn helps bring the narrative forward in a more entertaining and successful way. The three musicals that present this form successfully are; Chicago, Grease and 'The Rocky Horror Show'. When watching the musical 'Chicago' the audience is constantly in suspense repeatedly asking themselves - will she or wont she be found guilty? Thus, the awaiting trial provides a rather tedious impression on the audience, as the musical involves much pandemonium and movement for the viewers so...
