Equus is not a naturalistic play. This is reflected in the devices used by Shaffer to convey many images of slightly or more than slightly unnatural occurrences. By far the most obvious device used by Shaffer is the way that at all times, every member of the cast is present onstage. There are benches laid out on the stage, which all of the members of the cast sit on. This makes them visible at all times to everyone in the audience. All of the cast members sit still, but wear nothing other than what they would wear to act their part in. During the play, they are sometimes referred to directly. Alans father even stands up to deliver a comment of his about Alan, being used by Dysart, then sits again. When they are needed, they simply stand up and walk on. This is used for two reasons.
