Demand for electricity varies greatly; locations such as Sheffield, which are heavily industrialised by steelworks etc., require a greater amount of electricity in comparison to small villages. Building Services Technology and Design state the standard reduced voltage for 'large/heavy industries, cities, towns and railways' as 33 kV compared to 'housing, schools, small commercial premises' which is substantially less at 230 V. It should be noted there are other levels of voltage; I have quoted the two extremes. 230 V is provided by single-phase whereas anything larger supplied by three-phase. Three-phase consists of three phases which are offset proportionally between each other. Figure 1 shows how three-phase power behaves, one phase is continually peaking.
