TYPES OF MEMORY A memory chip is a chip that holds programs and data either temporarily or permanently. The categories of memory chips are Random Access Memory (RAM), Read Only Memory (ROM), Cache memory and buffer memory. Random Access Memory RAM or primary storage, is located in RAM chips physically close to the CPU. The architecture of RAM is similar to that of mail boxes at a post office. A RAM chip is made up of addressable locations (cells). Whenever a CPU writes data, instructions or information to RAM,it wipes out the previous contents of RAM. RAM stores data for processing, the instructions for processing the data, processed information that is waiting to be sent to an output or secondary storage device.
