Hardware and Software Definitions A computer system consists of hardware and software. Formal definitions: * Hardware is the physical part of a computer system - the processor(s), storage, input and output peripherals All computer systems require at least four types of hardware. (processor, storage, input and output peripherals) * An input device is a peripheral unit that allows data to be transmitted to the computer processor. No computer, however powerful, is of value unless it is possible to give it instructions and data to be used when those instructions are carried out. Data can be collected in a range of ways using for example, a keyboard, a mouse, a graphics tablet, a touch screen, a bar code reader etc. * An output device is a peripheral unit that translates signals from the computer into a human-readable form or into a form suitable for re-processing by the computer at a later stage.
