Hardware and Software Definitions A computer system consists of hardware and software. Formal definitions: * Hardware is the physical part of a computer system - the processor(s), storage, input and output peripherals All computer systems require at least four types of hardware. (processor, storage, input and output peripherals) * An input device is a peripheral unit that allows data to be transmitted to the computer processor. No computer, however powerful, is of value unless it is possible to give it instructions and data to be used when those instructions are carried out.
