The Simpsons is a very successful animated sitcom. A sitcom is an abbreviation of situation comedy in which you have different storylines for every episode. Other famous animated sitcoms include Family Guy, Futurama and South Park. The Simpsons, created by cartoonist Matt Groening (and named after the members of his immediate family except for Bart, which is an anagram of brat) first appeared on American television on April 19, 1987.
