Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me." (Ruth 1:16-17) Ruth's relationship with her mother in law is the ultimate example of faithfulness. It reveals the characteristics of faithfulness in a moving passage that doesn't seem to find its parallels in the world today. Faithfulness is unconditional, submissive, and sacrificial. The pursuit of personal happiness has a higher following than that of faithfulness, whether it be to one's family, friends, or Lord, in this day and age.
