Background Info: The Reaction A nitro group can easily be substituted to a benzene ring in al aromatic electrophilic substitution using a nitrating solution (a mixture of concentrated sulphuric and nitric acids). When benzene is nitrated there is only one possible product as all the positions that the nitrate group may attach to are equivalent. If there is already at a position on the benzene ring there are three possible products, with the nitro group being substituted to the second, third or fourth (ortho, meta or para respectively) positions relative to the group already present on the ring.
