IGCSE COURSEWORK APRIL 2006 C2 & C3 Properties of Acids Practical AIM: The purpose of this practical experiment is to investigate the various properties of acids and their reactions with metals and other compounds. APPARATUS: Equipment: Test tubes, test tube rack, beakers, pipettes, a Bunsen burner, tile, tripod, gauze, evaporating dish, lab coat, safety glasses. Acids: Nitric Acid, Sulphuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Ethanoic Acid, Ionic Compounds: Barium Chloride, Sodium Carbonate, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Carbonate, Copper (II) Oxide, Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium Indicators: Limewater, Universal Indicator, Blue Litmus Paper METHOD: This experiment was conducted in four parts as follows: 1. Using four acids: sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and ethanoic acid. Pour approximately 50cm³ of each acid into a beaker and set to one side. 2.
