... Burning of Hydrocarbons to Power a Car Engine: Hydrocarbons would need to be burnt in order to power the car, the fuel in the car will contain mixtures of hydrocarbons. Once a car has started, this undergoes the process of combustion1. This is where the hydrocarbons in the fuel are burnt to power the car (see Fig. 1)2. Fig. 1 Compounds with Different Chain Length and Structure: A simple compound like methane can be broken down easier than decane since it has a shorter chain length. Also due to the fact that less energy is needed to break the bonds. Whereas in a compound like decane, more energy is needed to break the molecule apart. This is one of the reasons why compounds release different amounts of energy. Another reason for this is the fact that compounds with a longer chain length have stronger intermolecular forces, so more energy is needed to overcome

User Reviews of this Essay

What our users think of this essay:

"Overall, a little poor. The majority of the report is very generally worded and fails to properly examine any of the scientific principles underlying the use of hydrocarbons as fuel - a simple word equation is about as far as this goes. I get the impression that the author has simply taken passages from the quoted sources and reworded them to form the report without attempting to form a full understanding of the chemistry at work, as frequently statements are made without explaining *why* they are the case. On a more positive note, the report is well laid-out and headings are used effectively to break up the text, making the report very easy to read. TSR user: Illusionary"
