China and Europe were virtual equals in technological advancement until the nineteenth century. During the nineteenth century European technological advancement far surpassed that of China, and allowed Europe to dominate the rest of the world for the next two centuries. One question that has been brought up often in trying to understand the course of history is "Why did China lag behind Europe in technological innovation when it had the same resources and capabilities to industrialize." Various answers have been offered and many are quite plausible. This essay will attempt to examine the various explanations, and to propose a view differing from the normal. Hopefully sufficient evidence will be provided to prove that innovation in China and Europe took divergent paths due to each having differing societal goals.
