EPOS means Electronic Point of Sale, where data is captured at the time and place of sale. Point of sale systems need personal computers or specialized terminals combined with cash registers (usually), bar code readers, optical scanners and magnetic stripe readers for accurately and instantly capturing the transaction. Point of sale systems may be connected directly to a central computer so that they can check the credit of the customer or to update the stock control, but sometimes they are stand-alone machines that store the daily transactions until they can be delivered or transmitted to the main computer for processing. EFTPOS Credit card and debit card transactions that go through a 'swipe' machine are dealt with via a process known as EFTPOS .
