Kamela Aliaj AS BIOLOGY The effect of Enzyme Concentration on Rate of Reaction: PLAN Aim: The aim of this experiment is to investigate how the concentration of yeast affects the rate of reaction. Background Information: Enzymes can be defined as biological catalysts. A catalyst is a substance, which speeds up a chemical reaction, but it remains unchanged itself at the end. Enzymes are biological catalysts because they are protein molecules made by living cells. The chemical(s), which an enzyme works on, is called its substrate. An enzyme combines with its substrate to form short-lived enzyme/substrate complex breaks up to products and enzyme. The enzyme remains unchanged at the end of the reaction and is free to interact again with more substrate. Enzymes such as catalyse are protein molecules, which are found in living cells.
