The Human Embryonic Stem Cells and the Promise of Stem Cell Based Treatments. Matriculation number: 0235945 (Note: English is not my first language) Summary: The research on human embryonic stem cells (HESC) is advancing knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms. This promising area of science is also leading scientists to investigate the possibility of cell-based therapies to treat disease, which is often referred to as regenerative or reparative medicine. The new era in stem cell biology began in 1998 with the derivation of cells from the human blastocyst and fetal tissue with the unique ability of differentiating into cells of all other tissue (i.e. these cells are pluripotent). Introduction: Stem cells have two important characteristics that distinguish them from other types of cells.
