... Enzyme Investigation: The Effect of pH on the Activity of the Enzyme Catalase Practical Investigation By Omar Aly Henry Cort Community School GCSE Course work 2003-2004 The Effect of pH on the Activity of the Enzyme Catalase Aim In this experiment I will study the effects of ph on the performance of the enzyme catalase in breaking down hydrogen peroxide. Introduction Enzymes are proteins that control vital biological process. Enzymes behave as catalysts and control the digestion of food and the production of chemicals like fats, proteins and DNA. Living organisms have hundreds of chemicals reactions inside them but in order to speedup these reactions heat could be applied but this heat can damage the cells so enzymes are used to speed up the reactions. For each reaction there is an enzyme catalysing it so there are hundreds of enzymes. Because enzymes are catalysts they help chemical reactions without being used up themselves. Catalase Catalase speeds up the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide 2H 2O2 (aq)
