PLANT HORMONES REGULATE DEVELOPMENT Introduction Development of plants involves processes of growth and differentiation of cells into tissues and organs. Growth is considered to be the permanent increase in size, weight and cell number of the plant. It uses metabolic energy in both the cell division and enlargement. Differentiation is the genetically programmed structural change with occurs progressively, involving both structure and function. Cell division, expansion and differentiation are restricted to regions called meristems. This is where all growth and organ formation of flowering plants is initiated and controlled. Plants grow along longitudinal axes due to development from shoot and root apical meristems after germination. The primary body of a plant arises from cell division in the apical meristems. Roots and stems may continue to increase in size due to cell division in the lateral meristems. Lateral meristems are formed within the vascular and ground tissue systems of most roots and stems.
