Human Biology Coursework on Substrate concentration. Introduction: The experiment was carried to investigate the effect of altering substrate concentration on the rate of reaction. The substrate was hydrogen peroxide and the catalyst was catalase, found in yeast. Catalase acts as a catalyst for the process of Hydrogen Peroxide breaking down into water and oxygen. The oxygen given off in this exothermic reaction is what we are measuring. Method: Apparatus setup as shown below using clamps and clamp stands to hold the boiling tubes in place: Five dilutions of Hydrogen Peroxide were mixed up and stored in test tubes. The dilutions were: 8cm cubed of H2O2 for the 20 vol solution 6cm cubed of H2O2 with 2cm cubed of water for the 15 vol solution 4cm cubed of H2O2 with 4cm cubed of water for the 10 vol solution 2cm cubed of H2O2 with 6cm cubed of water for the 5 vol solution 8cm cubed of water (distilled) for the 0...
