Scientific Knowledge The definition of osmosis is the movement of water from an area of high concentration to a place with a low concentration of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane (lets small molecules through but not larger molecules). Osmosis in plant cells can cause water to enter the cells or water to exit the cells. When water enters the cell it is called turgid. If a plant cell is placed in distilled water, because there is a low concentration of water in the cell, water from the outside enters through a semi-permeable membrane called the cell membrane. Causing the cell to become turgid because the cell sap pushes outwards on the cell. When water exits the cell, this happens because a lower concentration of water surrounds the cell, this causes the water in the cell sap to move out of the cell.
