... Enzymes Coursework Enzymes are "biological catalysts". This means that they assist in speeding up a reaction, but remain completely unaltered afterwards. Enzymes can have two functions. They can either be involved in reactions that build up material (or synthesise material), such as human tissue, these are known as anabolic reactions. However, they can also be involved in reactions that break down products or materials (a good example of this is what takes place in the digestive system), these are catabolic reactions. They are, from a theoretical point of view, everlasting, in the way that they can be used over and over again, but in practice, this is not always the case. As the enzymes suffer from excess use, a certain amount of wear and tear from constant reactions in digestion and other functions, ie for both catabolic and anabolic reactions.
