Effects of temperature on Catalase Background Catalase is a very important enzyme that operates in animals and plants alike, and one of its functions is to convert a toxic oxidizing agent, hydrogen peroxide, into water and oxygen gas. Hydrogen peroxide has several uses by the body, but there is only a very low amount that the body can tolerate. White blood cells secrete hydrogen peroxide as a means of killing bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide is also a byproduct of several bodily processes. The following formula concerns this neutralization of the hydrogen peroxide, and its conversion into water and oxygen: catalase 2H2O2 ==> 2H2O + O2 Catalase is stored in liver cells, in compartments called peroxisomes. These are triggered to release catalase whenever there is an excess of hydrogen peroxide, and an extremely quick reaction takes place (that is, the above reaction).
