Investigation: Enzyme Reactions to Change Change in Substrate Concentration Introduction: Enzymes are biological catalysts that help chemical reactions to take place within living organisms. Enzymes act to speed up the rates of reactions that would otherwise take place much more slowly. The chemical substance on which the enzyme acts is known as the substrate. Enzymes can be broken down into two groups: intracellular of extracellular. Many enzymes are intracellular, meaning they are used within the cells that produce them, for example cells used in cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Other enzymes are extracellular, meaning they act outside the cells that produce them, an example of these are digestive enzymes. Rennin is an example of an extracellular enzyme and is involved in digestion. When in contact with milk at the appropriate temperature and pH, rennin converts the protein in milk into a protein that is precipitated in the stomach. When changes to a semi-solid substance it...
