An enzyme is a catalyst that is found inside living organisms. Catalase is found inside the cells of living organisms, both animal and plants. Catalase breaks down the hydrogen peroxide that is produced in the cells through other reactions. Hydrogen peroxide is dangerous to the cells so it has to be broken down by the catalase quickly. The equation for what catalase does is: Hydrogen Peroxide + Catalase = Water + Oxygen. 2H2O2 = 2H2O + O2 An enzyme is made of protein and is designed specially to break down or to make one type of molecule. An enzyme has an active site into which its substrate fits exactly. The active site of catalase is just the right size for a hydrogen peroxide molecule. So...
