Lactose is a sugar most commonly found in milk. Some people have an intolerance to this sugar and it is at this point it has to be removed. The reason for this intolerance to lactose is due to the inability to digest a significant amount of it. This inability the result of shortage of the enzyme lactase, which is normally produced by the cell lining in the duodenum can be quite painful. The importance of this enzyme lactase is that it breaks down the sugar lactose, so it is able to absorb into the bloodstream.
