An investigation of the effect of the substrate hydrogen peroxide with the catalase enzyme in yeast suspension PLAN My aim is to measure the rate of reaction between a catalase enzyme (yeast suspension) and a substrate (hydrogen peroxide) varying the concentration of the enzyme and tabulating the amount of gas given off. 2H2O2 2H2O + O2 Hypothesis: I predict that as I increase the amount of yeast suspension the reaction between enzyme and substrate will be higher therefore increasing the amount of oxygen given off. Introduction: Catalase is a very common enzyme found in most plants and biological organisms such as liver, peas and potatoes. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is broken down by this enzyme and forms water (H20) and oxygen (O2). Outline Method: I will have the yeast suspension in a test tube with an arm, then I will add the hydrogen peroxide to the yeast suspension which will result in a reaction occurring between the two.
