An investigation into the plasma membrane Introduction The plasma membrane seperates the cell contents from outside the cell. It allows water soluble substances to pass through freely. But other substances can only pass the plasma membrane by way of proteins. The plasma membrane is composed of phospholipids and proteins. In beetroot cells a red anthocyanin pigment occurs in the vacuoles. Each vacuole is surrounded by a tonoplast membrane which is in the cytoplasm, which is surrounded by the plasma membrane. Prediction I am going to investigate how temperature affects the plasma membrane in beetroot. I believe that when the beetroot is heated to a high temperature the pigment will leak out of the cell.
