An experiment to find the concentration of the cell sap in a potato Definition of osmosis Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution of high water potential to one of low water potential through a selectively permeable membrane until equilibrium is reached. Background information The cell membrane of the cytoplasm in a plant cell is partially permeable, meaning it is porous and allows small molecules such as water to pass through it, but no larger molecules such as sucrose which are unable to pass through the small pores very easily. A region of high concentration of water is either a very dilute solution of something such as sucrose or pure water (it has a larger proportion of molecules). A region of low concentration is one with a smaller amount of water molecules, and is a concentrated solution of something like sucrose. A dilute solution has higher water potential than...
