In this report I am going to investigate what cloning really is, and what the medical benefits of cloning are. I am going to look at different types of cloning and the methods used to achieve these different types of cloning. Media reporting (on cloning) in the news, usually talks about only one type of cloning, reproductive cloning. However, there are different types of cloning, (See text box on the right) and different cloning technologies can be used for other purposes than simply producing the genetic twin of another organism. For example, one might clone plants or animals to Mass Produce organisms with desired qualities, such as a Prize-winning orchid or a genetically engineered animal. (For instance, sheep have been engineered to produce human insulin).Other reasons for cloning might include replacing lost or deceased family pets and repopulating endangered or even extinct species.
