What is the Significance of the Human Genome Project to human health and disease? Introduction A genome is all the genes and DNA in an organism. Genes carry information for making all the proteins required by all organisms. These proteins determine many things about the organism, i.e. how the organism looks, how well its body metabolizes food or fights infection, and even how it behaves. DNA is made up of four similar chemicals (called bases and abbreviated A, T, C, and G).that are repeated millions or billions of times throughout a genome. For example, the human genome has 3 billion pairs of bases. The Human Genome Project was a 13 year project which was founded in 1990. It is an international project that aimed to map where every human gene is found in our chromosomes. When started, they had many difficult and complex aims which they finally achieved in 2003.
