The Uses of Gene Technology Recombinant DNA technology involves the joining of DNA from different species and subsequently inserting the hybrid DNA into a host cell, often a bacterium. The first production of recombinant DNA molecules, using restriction enzymes occurred in the early 1970s since then there have been massive advances in the use and understanding of genetic engineering. (reference number 4) The use of Recombinant DNA has many advantages due its extremely wide range of uses ranging from medicine to industry. An example of the use of recombinant DNA in medicine is its use in the manufacturing of insulin. The insulin protein helps control how much sugar is in your bloodstream. Millions of diabetics need to take insulin. Insulin from cows and pigs has been used since the early 1900s to treat diabetes.
