THE PATENTING OF DNA The patenting of human DNA is one of the most widely debated topics. "Is an individual's genetic makeup patentable?" (techlaw.lls.edu.) How can it be ethical to patent something that makes up a part of ourselves? However, there is a reason behind what some find absurd. The benefit of patenting was "a practical measure designed to ensure that the benefits of inventions are quickly made available to all by providing an appropriate reward to encourage inventors." Nevertheless, is this process ethical? "The Human Genome Project is an international effort underway since 1990." (www.genaissance.com.) It has many minor aims, but two major ones. There are 3 billion pairs in human DNA. Sequencing these pairs is the first goal of the Human Genome Project. This means categorizing the DNA under appropriate letters - A, C, G, or T.
