The Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project (also known as HGP) began as a project planned to last 15 years and the project goals were to discover all the (approx.) 30000 to 35,000 human genes. Rapid technological advantages have accelerated the expected completion date to 2003 whereas before it was planned for 2005. This project began in October 1990 and is an international project. The human genome is being researched and mapped out to make them accessible for further biological study, and determine the complete sequence of the 3 billion DNA subunits (bases). As part of the Human Genome Project some parallel studies are being undertaken on selected organisms such as the bacterium E. coli to help develop the technology and interpret human gene function.
