AS Level Biology Coursework Ana Sekulic 12EH Recombinant DNA can only benefit humans?! Recombinant DNA is the manipulation of genetic material, which is later, inserted into other genes to alter their function. It imparts new capabilities and properties into plants, animals and soon humans, which can be altered for a variety applications. These then are called genetically modified organisms. The foundation of DNA technology was developed during the 1070's. They discovered a variety of enzymes that stimulated DNA to cut, copy and join. Basically what happens is that a plasmids, which is a bacterial cell that contains loops of DNA in addition to their circular chromosomal DNA, is cut open using a restriction endonucleus, which is an enzyme that is extracted from microorganisms. And, if another gene is cut using the same enzyme they form complimentary sticky ends which easily bond and form a covenant phosphodiester bond. This forms recombinant DNA. The first example...
