Johann Gregor Mendel Johann Gregor Mendel was born on July 22, 1822 in Heinzendorf, Austria. He was the onlyiest son of the small farmers Anton and Rosine Mendel. Johann had two sisters, one younger and one older one. His brilliant performance at school as a youngster impressed his parents a lot. Although they were very poor and could only hardly finace his education, he attend six years at the grammer school in Troppau. During the last two years he had to earn the maintenance for hisself. In 1840 he started to prepare for the study, under very poor financial conditions, but because of the renunciation of the inheritance from his younger sister, he could fully concantrated of his study, without worring about money and could complete his preperation with very good marks, in 1843.
