James Buthlay Human Genome Project The human genome project begun in 1990 and was originally planned to last approximately 15 years. However due to rapid technological advances the completion date occurred just 13 years after, 2003, it began. The goals of this project were: * Identify all the approximately 30,000 genes in human DNA. * Determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA. * Store this information in databases. * Improve tools for data analysis. * Transfer related technologies to the private sector. * Address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project. To help them come about and achieve their goals, the researchers also studied the genetics of several other, non-human, and organisms. Including E.Coli, the fruit fly, and the laboratory mouse.
