Gene therapy is the remarkable treatment of disease by altering our DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the long, complex molecules that carry our genetic information and reside in the nuclei of all our cells. Gene therapy may sound like a normal medical advance, but it is most definitely not. The restructuring of our genetic material is a revolution. It will redefine the word human, as people will be able to make themselves whatever they want. But how far should we go? What are the subtle distinctions between genetic therapy and genetic enhancement--between curing old diseases and creating new bodies? We have in our lives now designer clothes, but what about designer people? You could take your choice: Be Smarter? Be Taller? Be Blue-eyed? Be Beautiful? Musical, muscular, ambitious, ambidextrous?
