Gene and inheritances One of the first questions people ask when someone in their family is diagnosed with diabetes is whether or not their other family members will get diabetes. So it's no surprise that research into the question of inheritance was among the earliest aspects of diabetes to be funded by Diabets UK back in the early 1950s. Genes can be described as the set of biological instructions we inherit from our parents. These instructions will determine how our bodies look and work and how they react to the environment. Since the 1950s, our understanding of the role played by inheritance in chronic conditions such as diabetes has been radically transformed by the growth of scientific knowledge about genes.
