Charles Robert Darwin 1809 - 1882 Darwin was born and brought up in a house on The Mount in the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury England on February 12th 1809. Charles Darwin did not come up with the idea of evolution, he was merely the first to come up with an explanation for how evolution worked that explained what he and other biologists saw in the world. Darwin came up with the idea of Natural Selection. This is the idea that the environment an organism lives in helps to determine which organisms survive and produce young, and which do not. When Darwin was a young man he travelled around the world on the H.M.S. Beagle (1831-1836), a research vessel. His job was to make observations on the plants and animals found in the places the ship docked. In the Galapagos Islands, Darwin observed many organisms, including finches and tortoises.
